๐ฐ Articles in English: A, An, and The
What are Articles?
Articles are little words we use before nouns. They tell us if weโre talking about something general or specific.
Think of articles like a spotlight:
A and An: The spotlight is dim โ you're talking about any one thing.
The: The spotlight is bright โ you're pointing to a specific thing!
๐ Meet the Articles
"A" and "An" โ Indefinite Articles
These are used for something not specific.Use "a" before words starting with a consonant sound:
๐ "I have a dog."
๐ "She drives a car."
Use "an" before words starting with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u):
๐ "He ate an apple."
โ๏ธ "We saw an airplane."
๐ก Pro Tip: It's about the sound, not the letter!
"An hour" (the "h" is silent, so it sounds like a vowel).
"A university" (sounds like "yoo," a consonant sound).
"The" โ Definite Article
Use "the" when youโre talking about something specific โ the listener knows what you mean.๐ถ "The song on the radio is my favorite."
๐ฅ "Pass me the spoon, please."
๐ก Pro Tip: Use "the" with unique things:
๐ "The Earth orbits the Sun."
๐ป "We climbed the tallest mountain."
No Article โ When do you skip the article?
Donโt use articles with plural nouns or uncountable nouns when speaking in general.
"I love music." ๐ต
"Cats are cute." ๐พ
๐ Common Mistakes to Avoid
Donโt use "a" or "an" with plural nouns:
