The Debate Champion

C1

Daniel had always been terrified of public speaking, but his professor encouraged him to join the university’s debate team. Hesitant at first, Daniel decided to give it a try. His first practice session was a disaster—he stuttered, forgot his arguments, and felt humiliated. But the team’s captain, Mia, saw potential in Daniel and offered to mentor him. She taught him how to structure arguments, project confidence, and think on his feet. Slowly, Daniel improved. His first debate competition was nerve-wracking, but he surprised everyone, including himself, with a well-crafted rebuttal that won his team the round. By the end of the semester, Daniel had become one of the team’s strongest debaters. He realized that stepping out of his comfort zone had unlocked strengths he never knew he had.
